1. What truck sizes are available?
For long-distance moves, U-Haul offers 5 truck sizes ranging from 10 ft to 26 ft. You can choose a size based on the size of your home, but it can be difficult to exchange the truck if you need more room to load belongings.
The company recommends choosing the larger size if you’re unsure, which could mean paying for extra space you don’t need.
U-Haul also has other rental equipment besides moving trucks, but not all locations will carry the same inventory. They rent pickup trucks, cargo vans, trailers (cargo, utility and motorcycle/ATV) and U-Box® portable storage containers.

It’s also important to note that rental trucks typically seat 2-3 people, making traveling with a family or pets difficult. Plus, the trucks do not meet the safety requirements for car seats, according to U-Haul’s website — a dealbreaker if you need to travel with young children.
2. How much does it cost, and are there discounts?
Daily rental rates for local moves are often inexpensive, but U-Haul rates can get pricey for out-of-state moves, especially when you add the cost of fuel and liability coverage.

3. Does U-Haul guarantee the rental?
U-Haul guarantees confirmed reservations at locations with the “Reservation Guarantee” badge. U-Haul will pay you $50 if they fail to meet your preferred time, place or truck size.
For locations without the “Reservation Guarantee” badge, U-Haul agrees to contact you at least one day prior to the move if the preferred truck size or location is not available to work on an alternative. If an acceptable solution isn’t available, U-Haul will pay you $50, and the reservation will be canceled.
4. How do I book a U-Haul, and can someone else drive it?
You can book a truck online or at a local rental location. The requirements for renting a U-Haul include a valid driver’s license and a credit or debit card to make a reservation online (some locations might take a cash payment).
It’s possible to pay for a truck and let someone else drive it, but the person who signs the contract is responsible for any damage to the vehicle.
5. Do the trucks have automatic transmissions and cruise control?
All U-Haul trucks have automatic transmissions, but most don’t have cruise control. Select 26’ F650 moving trucks are equipped with cruise control, according to U-Haul’s website. Check with a nearby location about the availability of trucks with the feature.
6. What’s the gas mileage?
U-Haul trucks typically average 10-12 MPG, but it can vary based on the terrain and the weight of your belongings. Customers are responsible for paying for fuel during the move.
You can maximize gas mileage by following U-Haul’s recommended speed limits and practicing good driving techniques like avoiding fast acceleration or heavy braking.
7. Can I return the truck to a different location or keep it longer?
While reserving a truck, you must select locations for pickup and return. Long-distance moves have a set number of days before extra daily charges accrue to keep it past the allotted time. Changing the reservation is possible, but you would need to contact U-Haul directly to work out the details.
