Prison consultant reveals how Hunter Biden can survive jail (2024)

Hunter Biden will have to learn to be a 'small fish in a big pond' if he is jailed, a leading prison consultant said.

The president's son could serve any jail sentence at one of five federal prison camps located on current or former military bases around the country.

He would be best advised to be 'productive' by getting a job, for example in a prison law library, and not to break inmate protocol by trying to change TV channels.

Hunter would get 510 minutes of phone time a month and have to stand by his bed twice a day for counts.

Prison consultant Sam Mangel told DailyMail.com: 'It can be demeaning. One of the worst problems is boredom.'

Hunter was convicted of three felonies on Tuesday.

A jury in Wilmington, Delaware found him guilty of two counts of lying on a federal government form to buy a gun, and one count of possessing the firearm while abusing drugs.

He is expected to be sentenced in about four months.

The legal maximum sentence sis 25 years in jail but there is a strong chance he does not receive a custodial sentence.

However, he faces a second trial on tax charges in California in September which could lead to a stiffer penalty.

Mangel said Hunter may go to one of five minimum federal prison camps on what are now, or were, military bases.

They are in Pensacola, Florida, Montgomery, Alabama, Morgantown, West Virginia, Duluth, Minnesota and Yankton, South Dakota.

Rather than dormitory housing those prisons have facilities more like college dorms or small rooms, which would mean could be better protected and his Secret Service detail accommodated.

'People are going to be very curious about him,' said Mangel. 'They'll be thirsty for the knowledge that he can bring. In a camp there's a significant number that might have been in prison for 10 to 20 years and come down to a camp.

'He's been exposed to a life 99.999 percent will never have been. He'll be able to share stories with other inmates. He'll be looked up to by some but there will also be be a significant group that might be more conservative and might not have that regard for him.'

However, he said the prospect of a fight or physical attack would be 'extremely low.'

'If you do something stupid people will retaliate. They might throw food on your bed but it doe\s not tend to be physical.'

angel has advised Peter Navarro, the former Trump aide sentenced to four months in prison for defying subpoenas over the January 6 riots at the Capitol.

He said: 'I advise all my clients they want to be a little fish in a big pond, they don't want to stand out.

'It's good to be productive, so get a job you have experience with, maybe in the law library.

'Some people want to work o\n the military base, and that's a change of environment every day.'.

Hunter would get 510 minutes a month of phone calls and access to prison email.

'Given who he is they will be monitoring. He has to be careful,' said Mangel.

He will have to stand by his bed at 4pm and 10pm for inmate counts.

Hunter would be able to go to AA meetings, and if he goes through the federal Residential Drug Abuse Program (RDAP) program, that could lead to time off any sentence.

'He'll be able to watch TV, he won't necessarily be able to change the channel because there's a protocol,' Mangel said.

Any attack on Hunter would be a 'catastrophe for the Bureau of Prisons so obviously he would be watched more carefully and ultimately he will be safe.'

He said the most important thing immediately for Hunter is his pre-sentence report compiled by the probation office.

Even if he is not jailed for the gun offences the report could later be used following any conviction on the tax counts.

It is important to get across details in that interview including remorse.

'That (report) is the bible for him going forward. It determines where he might serve, what programs he might be eligible for,' said Mangel.

'He doesn't get a second pre-sentence interview, that report will carry into a future conviction. You only get one bite at the apple.'
